ENGLAND v SOUTH AFRICA
England: 154 (AJ Strauss 46, AJ Hall 5/18, A.Nel 3/35, SM Pollock 10.2.17.0)
South Africa: 157 for 1 in 19.2 overs ( CG Smith 89*, AB de Villiers 42 )
South Africa won by 9 wickets.
An almost full house of West Indian and English supporters attended this match, the result of which was to determine whether a victorious South Africa would be the fourth and last qualifier for the semi-final, or whether in the event of England winning, they or the West Indies would go through after their still-to-be-played potential decider together, the last match of the Super Eight stage.
But South Africa won, owing as much to Pollock for his miserly figures of 17 runs off ten overs, as to the irrepressible Hall's return of five wickets for 18, and – sadly – to an irresolute all-round performance by England. Smith struck his runs off only 58 balls and his 85 run partnership with de Villiers' at more than ten runs an over completed the rout.
