AUSTRALIA v SOUTH AFRICA
Australia : 377 for 6 ( ML Hayden 107 in 68 balls, MJ Clarke 92, RT Ponting 91 )
South Africa : 294 ( AB de Villiers 92, GC Smith 74, GB Hogg 3 for 63 )
Australia won by 83 runs
South Africa sent Australia in and Matthew Hayden responded by savaging the bowling to record the fastest century – 66 deliveries – in the tournament's history. Ponting and Clarke contributed towards a formidable total with a 161 run onslaught of their own. De Villiers and Smith set about this huge challenge by racing to the 200 mark in even fewer balls than Australia had taken, but a brilliant run out of de Villiers by Watson, an injury to Smith, the early dismissal of Gibbs, and Kallis' inability to maintain the momentum reined in the South African threat. Tigerish Australian fielding contributed towards the collapse of the normally potent Proteas lower order, and ultimately the Australian victory was comfortable. Man of the Match was awarded to Matthew Hayden, who with Herscelle Gibbs, in recognition of his six sixes in a single over in an earlier match against Holland at this ground, were awarded honorary citizenship of St.Kitts and Nevis by Prime Minister Dr.Denzil Douglas,
for their record-breaking feats.
