In recent times New Zealand's tenacity has regularly frustrated South Africa, and the pattern continued in this match, begun by an outstanding opening spell from Shane Bond, albeit it on a responsive pitch. The rest of their bowlers gave nothing away. It was hard to believe that these were the same South African batsmen who had demolished the West Indian attack here so explosively four days previously. New Zealand's response was carefully calculated. Fleming and Styris used almost all of their side's allotted overs to reach their target. Their method was unspectacular but the objective was two points, and their victory was emphatic.
